Semester Conversion Subcommittee Reviewing Overlays Applications

  • November 30, 2016

As semester conversion changes continue, the GE Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum has been charged with reviewing applications from departments and programs to certify classes to qualify for the new semester overlay requirements.

Overlays are local graduation requirements that CSUEB students must complete under the new semester catalog. Currently, CSUEB students have one overlay requirement -- successfully completing a course that qualifies as a “Cultural groups and women” class.

Under the new requirement however, students will have three overlays: diversity; social justice; and sustainability.

Julie Glass, chair of the GE Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum said applications require faculty to show how their particular class will satisfy one of the new overlays and how students will achieve certain learning outcomes during the semester.

She said applications have started to come in and the subcommittee expects to continue reviewing them through next year. Semester conversion will be finalized in fall 2018.

Any faculty with questions about the application process or what requirements the committee will be looking for are encouraged to contact Glass at julie.glass@csueastbay.edu or Mitchell Watnick at mitchell.watnick@csueastbay.edu.
