Book-to-Action Event Encourages Participants to Get Involved with Food Sustainability and Justice

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ is working with the Hayward Public Library and other local partners to get the community talking about food sustainability and justice. 

It’s part of . The premise of the program — launched in 2011 — is for participants to read a book that allows them to put newfound knowledge to use through a community service project. Those involved also meet with the author and/or watch a film based on the topic. 

This year the featured book is “The Lentil Underground: Renegade Farmers and the Future of Food in America,” by Liz Carlisle. The book tells the story of a group of Montana farmers who defied corporate agribusiness by launching a sustainable food movement.   

A book discussion is scheduled for April 6 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Hayward Public Library located at 835 C St.

The documentary film, “Can You Dig This,” which addresses the complex web of environmental, social and political challenges that impact food sustainability, will be shown on April 28 at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s University Theatre from 2-3:30 p.m., and on May 5 at Hayward City Hall from 7-9 p.m.

The keynote event will be on April 21 at Hayward City Hall. It will include a sustainable resource fair from 5-7 p.m., followed by a panel presentation featuring Carlisle and other food sustainability experts.

is tied to the Sunol Water Temple AgPark this year. Created in 2006 through a historic partnership between the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and Sustainable Agriculture Education (SAGE), the AgPark fosters sustainable farming and public education programs while protecting natural resources in the Alameda Creek watershed.
