ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, East Bay is being recognized for its retention and graduation rates among Asian American and Pacific Islander students over the last four years. In 2011, the university was officially designated as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) by the federal government.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s Student Service Operation for Success (SSOS) was recently featured in the July 2015 AANAPISI Newsletter, which commended the program for having “embraced its role as a regional steward with new programs, expanded outreach and growing involvement in the lives of the surrounding community.”

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s SSOS-AANAPISI program targets historically underserved students from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands by offering academic services, counseling and cultural activities. The goal is to graduate career-ready students.

Political Science Department Chair Dr. Kim Geron, who is co-principal investigator and SSOS retention coordinator, says the program has proven effective. “It’s a challenge to come to a new university, and SSOS provides important student services that are sensitive to AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) needs. The mentors are fellow SSOS students who are sensitive to the different cultural backgrounds and history of each individual student."

The program has been very successful and has achieved retention and graduation rates of more than 90 percent, according to Geron.

Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions are federally designated colleges and universities that have an Asian American and Pacific Islander student population of at least 10 percent, as well as a significant percentage of low-income students. AANAPISI colleges are eligible to apply for grants from the Department of Education to develop programs and services focused on improving the retention and success rates of students.
