ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥â€™s partnership with Zagster offers campus community new transportation option: bicycle sharing

- March 30, 2015
As part of its sustainability program, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ partnered with Zagster in Fall Quarter 2014 to bring a bicycle-sharing program to campus, giving faculty, staff, and students an alternative mode of transportation.
The university currently has 10 bikes on campus: five in front of the RAW (Recreation and Wellness Center) Building and five at University Village. They can be used on and off campus.
“Having Zagster bikes on campus gives our campus community another option for getting around without having to rely on vehicles,” said Derrick Lobo, manager of CSUEB Parking & Transportation Services. “Our hope is that the bikes will deter folks from bringing their own vehicles to campus.”
The bikes especially benefit students living at University Village by giving them another option — in addition to the campus shuttle and Zipcar — for getting to campus for classes and meals.
“The bikes also help promote a healthy lifestyle,” Lobo said. “Faculty, staff, and students can reserve a bike on their lunch hour and get in some exercise.”
For a one-time fee of $15, students, staff, and faculty members have access to the bikes via a reservation system. Reserving a bike can be done from any Smartphone, laptop or computer. The first three hours of each rental are free; after that, the cost is $2 an hour for a maximum of $10 a ride.
The Zagster partnership is a joint venture between Campus Recreation & Programming and University Parking & Transportation Services. Zagster operates bicycle-sharing programs at Yale University, Duke University, Princeton University, Santa Clara University, and most recently The Ohio State University.
