Norma Rees, president of ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, East Bay from 1990 until 2006, died Thursday at age 83.

Rees led the effort in 2004 and 2005 to change the university's name from Cal State Hayward to ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥. She also oversaw construction of new buildings on the campus, high in the hills above Hayward — the first new buildings there since 1971. The university added a new home for its college of business and economics during her tenure, and also three new dormitories.

Leroy Morishita, the university's current president, announced Rees' death on Friday.
