Authors, physician to discuss college sports' hidden costs at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥

HAYWARD -- Collegiate sports will be the subject of talks by two authors and a noted physician on Wednesday at the Center for Sport and Social Justice at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥.
Authors Murray Sperber and Billy Hawkins, along with noted sports MD Cindy J. Chang, will discuss "The Hidden Costs of College Sports" at the free event that begins at 7 p.m.
Sperber, author of "Beer and Circus: How Big-Time College Sports is Crippling Undergraduate Education," is a former chair of the Drake Group, a national faculty committee advocating reform of college sports. He is a visiting professor of cultural studies of sport in education at UC Berkeley.
Hawkins, author of "The New Plantation: Black Athletes, College Sports, and Predominantly White NCAA Institutions," is a professor in sport management and policy program at the University of Georgia.
Chang was the chief medical officer for Team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London and head team physician for the athletic program at UC Berkeley from 1995 to 2008.
Wednesday evening's event will be held the University Theatre on the Hayward Campus of ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd.
