University President Congratulates PIQE Parents
- December 10, 2011
More than 90 parents recently filled the multipurpose room at Longwood Elementary School in Hayward, Calif., each one was recognized and honored as they graduated from the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) program.
The parents, who all have elementary school-age children, took the course to learn how to be more involved and knowledgeable about their children’s education, the school system — and future educational opportunities for their children.
Leroy Morishita, president of ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ East Bay, congratulated the parents for being pro-active in their children's education.
“We congratulate all of you for your hard work,” Morishita said. “The same way my parents motivated me, I encourage you to continue with your efforts so that your children can succeed.”
PIQE was founded in 1987 to promote involvement between low-income parents and their children’s education.
“Longwood Elementary families now know President Morishita firsthand and enjoyed hearing about his background, which is so similar to theirs,” said Claudia Quezada, a liaison between PIQE and CSUEB.
“Parents now know that coming from a humble background is not a deterrent to accessing higher education and achieving success in life,” Quezada said.
The Parent Engagement Education Program is a nine-week course, meeting for two hours each week. The free course provides parents with information about education standards and state university requirements.
