Pioneer rally falls short in loss to Sonoma State

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer men’s basketball team rallied from a 15-point second half deficit, but came up short in a 68-62 CCAA defeat to Sonoma State on Dec. 19.

The defeat leaves the Pioneers winless in CCAA play at 0-4 and 2-6 for the season. Sonoma State evens its CCAA record at 2-2. The Seawolves are 4-4 overall.

Trailing 60-45 with 5:17 remaining in the game, the Pioneers went on a 17-6 run to trail 66-62 with eight seconds left. East Bay’s Roshun Wynne scored 11 of the 17 points in the comeback. Will Olsem converted a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to seal the victory for Sonoma State.

In the first half, the Pioneers fell behind 28-11 with five minutes remaining. East Bay outscored Sonoma State 13-4 to trail 32-24 at halftime.

As a team, the Pioneers shot 42.6 percent from the field and were outrebounded by a 34-30 margin. East Bay converted 12 of 22 free throws compared to 19 of 23 for Sonoma State. Wynne led the Pioneers with 21 points including 16 in the second half. Mark Samuels followed with 14 points. Jacob Straley came off the bench to score eight points and pull down three rebounds.

Ben Washington scored 15 points to lead the Seawolves. Olsem contributed to the Seawolves victory with 12 points.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will resume CCAA play on December 30 with a home game against Humboldt State. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
