ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Drops 67-60 Decision to Cal State Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. - The Pioneer men's basketball team stands at 0-2 in CCAA play and 1-4 overall following a 67-60 defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay on Dec. 4.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, currently on a four-game losing streak, was led in scoring by senior forward Will Freedman with 17 points. Freedman completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Jared Waters and Mark Samuels each scored 11 points. Samuels, the Pioneers leading scorer for the season averaging over 18 points a game, scored all 11 points in the second half.

The Otters, who improved to 2-1 in the CCAA and 3-2 for the season, had three players score in double figures. Darroll Phillips, with seven 3-pointers led Cal State Monterey Bay with 22 points. Brandon Ward followed with 14 points and seven assists. Ian Hosford contributed to the Otter victory with 13 points on 6 of 9 from the field. 

Two free throws and a jumper by Roshun Wynne gave the Pioneers a 26-22 advantage with 4:36 left in the first half. Consecutive three-pointers by Phillips who tallied 18 first half points enabled the Otters to take a 30-26 lead with 2:06 left. Wynne's three point basket cut Monterey's lead to 30-29. The Pioneers took a 31-30 advantage only to see Warren Freeman hit a layup with 49 seconds remaining to give the Otters a one point advantage at intermission.

The Pioneers opened the second half with a 6-0 run to take a 37-32 lead. Cal State Monterey Bay took the lead for good 40-39 on a Freeman basket with 14:22 remaining. The Otters took their biggest lead of the game 66-53 with 1:25 left on Hosford's 3-point play. Samuels scored the Pioneers final seven points, but Phillips iced the game for the Otters with a free throw with 25 seconds left.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will host Notre Dame de Namur on Dec. 11. The nonconference game will begin at 3 p.m.
