Coronado Neighborhood Council (CNC) held its 33rd annual scholarship dinner Oct. 22 to present scholarships to youth from the neighborhood and throughout the city who are “high achievers,” who plan to contribute their time, talents and resources back to their communities when they finish their education.

During the dinner, Joe L. Fisher, Neighborhood Council President, thanked business and political sponsors for contributing to the scholarship fund.

Fisher said Coronado residents were given first preference, and then “We reached out to other communities.” He said recipients were evaluated on how they completed their applications and essays. “We made our selections based upon their future plans and their participation in church and community-based organizations,” he said.

Along with Fisher, members of the scholarship selection committee included Louise Nicks, Treasurer; Maxine Fisher, Secretary; and Mary Drake, Co-treasurer.

Chevron led the way with the largest donation of $3,000 to Tamika A. Kelly. She lives in the Coronado Neighborhood and is on the dean’s list with a 4.0 Grade Point Average. Her major is in Health and Human Services. After graduation from CSU East Bay with a Masters Degree, she plans to work in the Coronado community with troubled teens.
