POMONA, Calif. – The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women’s soccer team fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 4-1, after giving up three second-half goals on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers (6-8-3, 4-8-2 CCAA) held the Broncos to a 1-1 tie through 45 minutes, but could not hold on, dropping their second straight match.

Cal Poly Pomona opened the scoring in the 15th minute, getting a goal from Jennifer Rivera to take a 1-0 lead. The Broncos’ goal came after Justine Barclay played the ball into the top of the box for Rivera, whose low, hard shot beat CSUEB keeper Nina Cefalo.

The Pioneers answered with the equalizer 10 minutes later. After winning a corner, sophomore Kara Yamamoto played the ball into the box, finding freshman Gail Bassett, who put her shot into the back of the net to beat keeper Sarah Rohman and tie the game at one goal apiece.

Neither team scored for the remainder of the half, with the Pioneers outshooting the Broncos 7-3 in the opening frame. ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ forced Rohman to make four saves in the half, while Cefalo made two stops to maintain the 1-1 draw.

The Broncos came out for the second half looking to score and did just that, putting away a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the second frame. Barclay added a goal in the 53rd minute, while Rivera scored her second of the day in the 59th minute to give Cal Poly Pomona a 3-1 lead.

Though the Pioneers continued to put pressure on the Bronco defense, throwing four shots at Rohman and forcing her to make two saves in the second half, they could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, Pomona added another goal in the 73rd minute from Callie Wilson to increase its lead to three goals.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ finished the match with an 11-10 advantage in shots, with Cefalo making five saves in the loss. Yamamoto paced the Pioneers with three shots, all of which were on target. Rivera led the Broncos with four shots, while Rohman needed six saves to earn the win.

East Bay returns to action on Friday, Oct. 29, playing host to UC San Diego for Senior Day at Pioneer Stadium. The Pioneers and Tritons are set for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
