Pioneers suffer first home defeat of the season to Cal Poly Pomona

HAYWARD, Calif. - The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women's volleyball team suffered their first home loss of the season to Cal Poly Pomona in four sets 23-25, 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, on Oct. 8. With the defeat, the Pioneers are now 11-4 overall and 6-4 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona improves to 4-6 in the CCAA and 6-9 on the year.
The Broncos had four players with 10 or more kills led by Kristin McNeese's 14 putaways. Diana Lake had 10 kills and completed a double-double with 15 digs.
Katie Allen and Brianna Bryant recorded 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Allen added three solo blocks while Bryant hit at a .400 clip onthe night. Lauren Massa had a match-high 29 digs.
A kill by Bryant enabled the Pioneers to take a 21-18 lead in the first set. East Bay still led 23-22 on a Bronco attack error before Cal Poly Pomona scored three unanswered points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers took a 19-16 advantage in the second set on an Allen service ace. Consecutive kills by K.C. Walsh and Allen enabled the Pioneers to tie the match.
In a hard-fought third set, the Pioneers grabbed an 18-15 lead on an Allen kill. The Broncos tied the match 19-19 on a Katie Colin service ace. A kill by Kitona Offord gave the Pioneers a 23-21 lead. Back-to-back kills by McNeese tied the set 23-23. Jit Athwal put down a kill to give the Pioneers a 24-23 advantage. Once again, the Broncos scored three unanswered points to take a 2-1 advantage.
A kill by McNeese gave the Broncos an 11-10 lead in the fourth set. The Broncos never trailed the remainder of the set to capture the four-set victory.
The Pioneers will close out their four-match homestand against CCAA leader and No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino (13-1, 10-0 CCAA) on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Gym.
