LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men's soccer team allowed a pair of goals in each half, eventually falling to Cal State LA, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Stadium. The Pioneers (2-9-2, 1-6-2 CCAA) dropped their third straight match but put half of their shots on goal in the loss.

"Cal State LA is a solid team and they made us pay for our mistakes," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "We did much better today with the ball and had some really good combinations. We showed improvement with the ball today."

The Golden Eagles got the scoring started early, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. Cal State LA's Taylor Rivas putaway the header off a corner kick from Marvin Sandoval that Tyler Coombes played back into the box for Rivas.

Leading 1-0, Cal State LA continued to put the pressure on, adding another goal in the 11th minute on a shot from Erik Vargas in the box.

The Pioneers looked to get on the board late in the first half, recording their first two shots of the match in the 38th minute, as sophomore defender Michael Dowson had a shot blocked and forced LA keeper Thaddeus Caraway to make a save on the shot off the rebound. Despite its efforts, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ could not find the back of the net and went to the half trailing 2-0.

The Golden Eagles picked up where they left off to start the second half, throwing a barrage of shots at freshman keeper Bryce Bookhamer in the first eight minutes of the second frame. Cal State LA needed five shots before finally breaking through in the 53rd minute on a shot from David Hauser, who beat Bookhamer after making his way through the defense and putting away his shot from 16 yards out.

Cal State LA added a fourth goal in the 77th minute, as Vargas fed Gonzalo Pulgar in the box to beat East Bay keeper Patrick Gilbertson for the score.

Despite allowing two goals in the second frame, the Pioneers forced Caraway to make two stops to finish out the shutout win. Cal State LA out-shot the Pioneers 23-6, putting 11 shots on goal, led by Vargas and Pulgar's four shots apiece. Bookhamer posted five saves in the loss, while Gilbertson made a pair of stops in nearly 34 minutes of play.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ returns to action on Sunday, when it meets Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson at 11:30 a.m.
