HAYWARD, Calif. – Under cold and wet conditions at Pioneer Stadium, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men’s soccer team gave up two late goals to Chico State, falling to the Wildcats, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers (2-12-2, 1-9-2 CCAA) came from behind and held the 14th-ranked Wildcats to a 1-1 draw through 75 minutes of play, but could not hold off the North Division leaders in the end.
"We had some good moments today," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "[Alexis] Romo scored a great goal for the equalizer and Bryce [Bookhamer] had another strong performance in goal. Chico is a good team and they have a couple of players up top who are quite a threat. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to shut them down for 90 minutes."
Chico State opened scoring in the 20th minute on a goal from Chris Akwaja, who won a ball on the far side of the box before putting his shot into the lower right corner of the net to beat CSUEB keeper Bryce Bookhamer and give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ got the equalizer from Alexis Romo just before the half. After Michael Dowson played East Bay’s second corner into the box, the ball was cleared out to the top of the box where it found Romo. From 23 yards, the freshman, who had come on just 10 minutes earlier, placed his shot into the upper right corner, beating Chico State keeper Sam Evans to his left.
The Pioneers nearly put in another just five seconds before the end of the half, as Dowson played a free kick from 40 yards that nearly fooled Evans, who made the last second save just inside the near post. The shot gave East Bay four in the half, compared to Chico State’s 16. Bookhamer made six saves in the opening frame, while Evans needed three saves as the Pioneers put all four shots on frame in the half.
The Pioneers came out more aggressive in the second half, looking to score the go-ahead goal. ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s best chance came in the 68th minute when Romo met up with a through ball to beat the Chico State defense and went one-on-one with Evans. Romo’s shot on the ground forced Evans to make a diving save to keep the game knotted at one goal apiece.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ held the Wildcats scoreless for the opening 30 minutes of the second frame before Akwaja struck again in the 75th minute. After Tyson Crim worked his way through into the box, he found Akwaja, who put away his shot on the ground from five yards to put Chico State up 2-1.
The Pioneers continued to put the pressure on over the next ten minutes, getting a shot from Sam Dueñas that was blocked in the 85th minute and a shot from Daniel Borst off a corner kick that forced Evans to make a save.
East Bay could not put in the equalizer, however, and saw Chico break through the defense again, scoring the insurance goal with just one minute remaining. Crim played another ball into the box, this time for leading scorer Ferid Celosmanovic, who finished and beat Bookhamer to give the Wildcats their final 3-1 advantage.
Bookhamer finished with eight saves in the loss, facing 32 Chico State shots, while Evans made five stops on the Pioneers’ eight strikes. Celosmanovic led the Wildcats with 11 shots, putting three on goal. Both Romo and Mike Rossi notched a pair of shots each to pace East Bay offensively.
"We're working hard and closing the gap bon our opponents in the conference," Cumbo said.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will hit the road again next weekend, traveling to Southern California to face Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. The Pioneers and Coyotes are set for a 3 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Oct. 22.
