English professor's one-act play takes New York award
Stephen D. Gutierrez has won a Maxim Mazumdar New Play award.

Yet another honor has come to Stephen D. Gutierrez, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ professor of English and director of creative writing. This time his play, “Game Day,” is a winner of the 2010 Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition in the One-Act category.
It will premiere during Alleyway Theatre's Buffalo Quickies program sometime in March 2011. The theater is located in Buffalo, NY.
This is the fifth play for Gutierrez, who holds a master of fine arts degree from Cornell University. His first four plays have been produced in the Bay Area.
Gutierrez wrote this politically incorrect play, dealing with illegal immigration and erupting hostilities, a couple of years ago.
The story revolves around two men venting their anguish -- with the help of considerable liquor consumption -- about illegal immigration and the consequences that erupt when a Mexican ice cream vendor makes a surprise appearance.
Alleyway Theatre Inc. is a non-profit, professional theater company dedicated to the development and production of new theater works.
Last month, Gutierrez was given the "American Book Award" for his collection “Live from Fresno y Los,” which was published in fall 2009. His first book, “Elements,” won the Charles H. and N. Mildred Nilo Excellence in Minority Fiction Award.
