Overtime goal gives CSUEB season-opening victory over Hawai'i Pacific

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i - The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women's soccer team used an overtime goal from sophomore Shianna Falk to edge Hawai'i Pacific, 1-0, on Thursday night. The Pioneers (1-0) needed 10 minutes of extra time to put away the game winner and top the Sea Warriors in their first effort of the 2010 campaign.
Falk's goal came just at the end of the first overtime period, sending the Pioneers home with the win after making her way through the central defense and putting a far post shot past HPU keeper Carianne Makino. Falk and fellow returning leading scorer Zuly Diaz paced the Pioneers with two shots apiece, while the Sea Warriors' Amber Fuller led all players with six shots on the night.
The Pioneers out-shot Hawai'i Pacific, 8-6, however, the two teams were even at six shots apiece through 90 minutes ofplay. Freshman keeper Donna Williams needed just one save to maintain the shutout and pick up the first win of her career for ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥. Makino made four saves for the Sea Warriors.
East Bay continues its Hawaiian trip with a meeting with Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday at Waipio Soccer Complex. Hilo is 1-0 on the year after topping Chaminade, 4-0, last weekend. The Pioneers and Vulcans are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. PT on Saturday.
