For the first time, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will provide volunteer help to residents moving into student apartments on the Hayward campus. For four days beginning Wednesday (Sept. 15), move-in squads will be stationed next to each residential building at Pioneer Heights, ready to help carry couches, lamps, boxes of books and other heavy equipment into rooms.

Refreshments and light food will be served from a booth as students and their families wait their turn to get situated.

Welcoming freshmen with a helping hand is expected to build a connection to the college lifestyle, said Martin Castillo, director of Housing and Residential Life.

“Transitioning from high school is part of the university experience,” Castillo said. “Living on campus helps students exercise their independence, and it’s taking a big step into adulthood.”

Approximately 1,300 students will move into Pioneer Heights. Of those students, 500 will be freshmen, which will be the main focus for the move-in squads.

Move-in squad volunteers are members of the Alumni Association and Greek clubs. Offering dollies and helping to physically move desired items such as heavy stereo equipment, chairs and TVs will be part of their agenda. There will be no charge for the service, which will run all day.

Ten to fifteen helpers will be available to assist newcomers each day during move-in.

“This is about the community embracing the students,” said Castillo. “We want to provide support as they start their college careers.”
