ARCATA, Calif. – The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men's soccer team notched its first conference victory of the season thanks to three goals and a season-high 12 saves, all from newcomers, in a 3-1 win over Humboldt State in Arcata on Sunday afternoon. The win was the Pioneers' (2-5-0, 1-3-0 CCAA) first in league play since Head Coach Andy Cumbo took over at the beginning of the 2009 season.

"The team played great today," Cumbo said. "They were focused on winning for 90 minutes. We started nine freshmen and two sophomores and they played like seniors."

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ took an early 1-0 lead in the 19th minute, when freshman Alexis Romo scored his first career goal. After redshirt freshman Josh Alvarez played a through ball to Romo, he took the ball up the left side of the box, beating Humboldt State keeper David Zwick with a far-post shot into the upper right corner. The goal marked just the second time this season that the Pioneers have scored first and snapped a 512-minute scoring drought.

The Pioneers held on to their 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first half, despite facing 13 Humboldt State shots. Freshman keeper Bryce Bookhamer, making his first start since suffering an injury in the season opener, made six stops in the first frame to keep the Jacks scoreless.

Humboldt State made sure the Pioneer lead did not continue far into the second half, as Josh Suggs converted a penalty kick in the 49th minute to tie the game at one goal apiece.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ was not discouraged, however, as it regained the lead for good in the 59th minute. After earning a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box, sophomore Michael Dowson placed the shot into the lower right corner to beat Zwick and put away his first score of the year.

"We defended really well and didn't give up any great scoring chances," Cumbo said. "The team responded well after the goal we gave up on the penalty kick. We countered well and scored some great goals. I'm proud of my team and happy to get our first CCAA win."

Leading 2-1, the Pioneers continued to look for more, adding a third goal just eight minutes later. Freshman Daniel Borst was the recipient of a pass from fellow freshman Jake Bedell in the box, where he converted to put East Bay up by two.

In a physical second half, the two teams combined for 18 fouls, two yellow cards and a red card for each team. The Jacks fought to pull back the two-goal deficit, taking 17 shots in the half and forcing Bookhamer to make another six saves to bring his game total to a season-high 12.

The Pioneers took 11 shots, putting four on goal, and were led by Romo's three strikes. Suggs paced all players, notching eight shots and putting four of those on frame. Zwick made one save in the loss for Humboldt.

Now with a CCAA win under its belt, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ returns to action on Sept. 24 at San Francisco State before rounding out the four-game road swing at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 26. The Gators and Pioneers are scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday in San Francisco.
