WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Hawai'i Pacific, falling 4-0 to the Sea Warriors (1-0) on Saturday night at Waipio Soccer Stadium. The Pioneers (1-1), who started five freshmen for the match, allowed two goals in each half and managed just four shots on the night in the defeat.

"Hawai'i Pacific is a very strong team," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "They have some excellent players and are very organized. They were a step ahead of us and we were able to see some of our weaknesses. We'll learn and get better from tonight's experience."

HPU got started just 13 minutes into the match, notching its first goal at the 12:57 mark off a corner kick. Nathan Scott played the ball in for Richard Guffens who converted a header into a 1-0 lead for the Sea Warriors.

Hawai'i Pacific continued to build momentum, scoring a second goal 15 minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the break. Guffens played a role again, notching his third of four points on the night after playing a cross to Luis Jungo who beat CSUEB freshman keeper Patrick Gilbertson for the goal.

Already trailing by two, the Pioneers suffered a blow just before the half when freshman Steven Belalcazar was sent off with a red card in the 44th minute, leaving CSUEB with just 10 men on the field for the remainder of the match.

Leading 2-0 and playing with a man-advantage, the Sea Warriors wasted no time getting on the board again in the second half, as Guffens dished out his second assist on the first of two Chance Bukoski goals on the night. A preseason All-PacWest selection, Bukoski added another less than two minutes later to give HPU the comfortable 4-0 lead.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ finished the game with a pair of shots in each half, two apiece from junior Brett Souza and freshman Carlos Navarrete. Bukoski led all players with eight shots on the night, including three on goal, helping the Sea Warriors outshoot the Pioneers 29-4.

HPU keeper Kay Flache needed two saves to preserve the shutout and the win, while Gilbertson made eight stops in his first collegiate start.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will round out its Hawaiian trip on Sunday when it takes on Chaminade in Honolulu. The Pioneers and Silver Swords are set to get underway at 6 p.m. PT at St. Louis Field.
