SEASIDE, Calif. – In a game that saw nearly every foul prompt a booking, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ and Cal State Monterey Bay played to a 2-2 draw through two periods of extra time. The Pioneers (2-6-1, 1-4-1 CCAA) came from behind in the second half and held off a strong push from the Otters in overtime to secure the draw.
"We played poorly in the first half, but we picked it up after the break," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "We had all the chances we needed but we couldn’t finish to get a third goal."
The Pioneers needed no time to take a 1-0 lead, getting a goal in the first minute of the match. Freshman Daniel Borst played a through ball to Alexis Romo who beat Monterey Bay keeper Sam Campanelli for his second goal of the season.
East Bay held onto the lead until the 33rd minute, when the Otters responded with a goal of their own from Tyler Dapello. After Beau Villanueva played a ball into the box, Dapello finished to beat Pioneer keeper Bryce Bookhamer and pull Monterey Bay even at one goal apiece.
The Otters weren’t finished, however, as they took a 2-1 lead just before the break. Juan Pablo Murillo played a cross to Forrest Alvarez, whose shot over Bookhamer found the back of the net in the 45th minute.
The first half saw Monterey Bay control possession after the Pioneer goal, taking eight shots and forcing five East bay saves. Campanelli didn’t make any saves, facing three shots from the Pioneers and taking a 2-1 advantage into the half.
The Pioneers came out of the break looking to pull even, taking three shots and forcing a Campanelli save in the first 15 minutes. East Bay broke through in the 62nd minute, getting a goal after Josh Alvarez played a near post cross for Brett Souza, who finished to tie the match 2-2.
From there, the two teams traded chances throughout the remainder of the half, with the Pioneers notching eight shots and forcing two saves. Cal State Monterey Bay got the first of seven bookings in the half in the 71st minute and saw Alex Shuler sent off on two yellows in the 77th minute. Meanwhile, the Pioneers collected three yellows before Arthur Ethel was shown red after his second yellow in the 88th minute, negating the man-advantage.
"The players were committed and professional and our style of play and behavior weren’t any different from any other game this year," Cumbo said.
The two squads ended regulation knotted at two goals apiece. The Pioneers posted eight shots and forced two Otter saves, while CSUMB notched five shots and Bookhamer made a pair of saves as well.
Playing with 10 men apiece, the two squads headed into the first period of extra time. The Otters posted four shots in 10 minutes, forcing Bookhamer to make two saves and having one shot saved by the Pioneer defense. East Bay saw Daniel Borst sent off in the 97th minute, giving CSUMB a 10-9 advantage going into the final overtime.
The second overtime saw the Pioneers take two shots, forcing a save by Otter defender Cody Lutz in the 102nd minute. The Otters notched three shots, with Bookhamer stopping two. East Bay also had Josh Alvarez sent off in the 106th minute, giving CSUMB a 10-8 advantage for the final five minutes of the match. The Pioneers held Monterey Bay off, ending in the draw after 110 minutes of play.
Souza paced the Pioneers with four shots, including three on goal, while Dapello’s six shots led the Otters. Campanelli made two saves and Bookhamer made nine, with the Pioneer defense making another three stops to help East Bay pick up the point.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will return home for the first time since Sept. 10 on Oct. 1 when it plays host to Cal Poly Pomona. The Pioneers and Broncos are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Pioneer Stadium.
