HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Despite dominating possession and out-shooting Chaminade, 21-8, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men's soccer team could not find the back of the net on Monday, falling to the Silver Swords, 3-0 in Honolulu. The Pioneers (1-2-0) dropped their second straight game to end the season-opening trip ahead of Friday's conference opener.
"We played really well today," CSUEB Head Coach Andy Cumbo said. "We had all of the ball and created many goal-scoring opportunities. We hit the frame a few times and the goalkeeper came up big a few times. We just couldn't find the goal. Unfortunately, the sport plays out like this sometimes."
The Pioneers and Silver Swords appeared to be headed to the half locked in a scoreless draw before Chaminade struck first in the 39th minute with a goal from Jon Fukumoto. Despite out-shooting the Silver Swords, 13-2, and putting six strikes on goal, the Pioneers went to the break trailing by one goal.
The second half saw the Pioneers add another eight shots, four of which were on goal. ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, however, could not get past CU keeper Hayes Sperry, who finished the game with 10 saves. Meanwhile, Chaminade added a pair of goals to seal the victory.
Junior striker Brett Souza led East Bay with eight shots, including five on goal, while freshman keeper Patrick Gilbertson made four saves in the losing effort.
The Pioneers dropped two of three games on the Hawaiian trip and will look to turn things around against two ranked opponents in No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 12 Cal State LA to open the league slate this week. Friday's home opener against the Toros is set for 7 p.m., while the meeting with the Golden Eagles kicks off at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Pioneer Stadium.
"We've learned a lot this trip," Cumbo said. "It was a great experience for us."
