Barcomb Resigns From Puget Sound, Headed to ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥
- June 14, 2010
Suzy Barcomb, the most-successful women’s basketball coach in Puget Sound history, completed her 13th season with the Loggers in 2010 and boasts a 261-92 overall record that includes four trips to the NCAA III tournament in the past five years. The Loggers have enjoyed six twenty-plus win seasons and ten consecutive seasons earning 16-plus wins under her direction.
After leading Puget Sound to their best record in school history in 2009-10 at 24-5 Barcomb was named Region 8 Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. She was named D3Hoops.com West Region Coach of the Year in 2006-07 after leading the Loggers to an appearance in the Elite Eight. Barcomb was also named Pacific Northwest Independent Regional Coach of the Year in 1998-99 after leading the Loggers to a record of 21-6 in her first season as head coach.
“We are obviously disappointed to lose a coach of Suzy’s caliber.” noted athletic director Amy Hackett. “Suzy has been a highly successful coach in our program but we appreciate her aspiration to coach in an athletic scholarship environment. She provided outstanding leadership for our student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom and we wish her continued success in her new challenge.”
Puget Sound will commence a national search for a new coach immediately.
Comments From Coach Barcomb:
For the last 12 years I have had the pleasure of working at the University of Puget Sound. It has been an amazing experience and one I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am so proud of what we have accomplished in regards to the basketball program but our accomplishments go beyond the basketball court. The outstanding young women I have had the opportunity to coach is truly astonishing. I take a great deal of pride in knowing that our basketball program has achieved so many different levels of success; athletically and academically.
The student-athletes, the alumni and parents have been tremendous and I know the rich tradition of what we collectively have built will continue for years to come.
To say this has been an emotional decision is a complete understatement. But, I know the team is strong in character and will accept this new challenge in their life with the same grace and dignity they tackled all of the other challenges they have faced. I have asked players to constantly push the envelope and reach beyond their comfort zones. I thought it was time I took my advice and reached outside of my comfort zone of Puget Sound.
I know that my years battling in the trenches in the Northwest Conference has prepared me well for this new challenge in my coaching career in rebuilding the program at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥.
I will forever be indebted to Richard Ulrich for taking a chance on me 12 years ago and I know that our University and our present Athletic Director, Amy Hackett will find a perfect fit to guide the women's basketball program.
