Ninth-Inning Comeback Secures Series Split for Pioneers

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Pioneer baseball team scored twice in the ninth inning en route to an 8-6 non-conference victory over Central Washington on April 11.
Charlie Sharrer opened the ninth with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Aaron Brown’s pinch hit single advanced Sharrer to third. Richie Gonzalez followed with a base hit to score Sharrer. Pinch hitter Josh Rush singled home Brown with the second run of the inning.
Stephen Gatehouse led off the game with a home run to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. The Pioneers pushed across two unearned runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 advantage.
A two-run homer by Levi Josewski, his ninth of the season, highlighted a three-run fifth as the Pioneers led 6-2. The Wildcats rallied with a run in the sixth and tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Pioneer starting pitcher Felipe Carvajal allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Devin Grigg hurled the last two innings of scoreless baseball to improve his record to 3-1 for the season.
Josewski and Nick McManus each had two RBIs while Gonzalez was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and drove in the go ahead run in the ninth. Sharrer and Alex Anicich were both 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Pioneers and Wildcats split the four game series. East Bay is now 16-24-1 for the season while Central Washington stands at 8-24.
