HAYWARD, Calif. - Behind solid pitching performances from freshman Lauren Zweigle and junior Cat Schorn, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Softball team posted a doubleheader sweep of Menlo College on Wednesday at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers (12-20) shut out the Oaks, 10-0, in six innings in game one before taking game two, 6-1, to win their fourth game in the last five.
Zweigle wrote the story in game one, tossing a complete game in the 2-0 win. The San Jose native shut out the Oaks, allowing just two hits in six innings of work while striking out a season-high 11. The shutout was Zweigle's first of the season, while the win was her fifth of the year.
Offensively, the Pioneers got started right away, as freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado and junior left fielder Sarah Hasenfus led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles. After Coronado scored on a passed ball, freshman first baseman Emily Montanez doubled to left to bring in Hasenfus. East Bay loaded the bases on an error before stranding all three runners to take a 2-0 lead into the second.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ held onto the 2-0 lead for the next two and a half innings before notching another pair in the fifth. After a leadoff single from Montanez, senior catcher Rachelle Boone blasted a two-run shot into straightaway center field to put the Pioneers up 4-0 before Menlo starter Jessica Cobb got out of the inning.
East Bay had its biggest inning to cap the game in the sixth, scoring six runs on four hits. Another pair of singles from Coronado and Hasenfus started off the inning before Montanez walked to load the bases. A single from Boone brought in two runs before Freiberg loaded the bases for freshman designated player Sara Holdridge, whose grand slam to center put the Pioneers up 10-0 to notch their third run-rule victory of the season.
Game two saw both offenses remain quiet through the first two and a half innings, as Schorn and Menlo starter Mikayela Viramontes combined to allow just three hits early on. The Oaks got to Schorn, but her defense helped back her up, forcing Menlo to leave five runners on in the first three innings.
The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the third, getting back-to-back singles from freshman outfielder Chelsea McEachran and Schorn to start the inning. Coronado's infield single turned into a pair of runs after she advanced to third on an error on the throw and McEachran and Schorn came around to put East Bay up 2-0. With Coronado on third, Hasenfus grounded out to second to pick up the RBI and give the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage. After Viramontes got the second out of the inning, Boone doubled and Holdridge followed with a double of her own to put CSUEB up 4-0 heading into the fourth.
After a quiet fourth and fifth, Menlo strung together three hits in the top of the sixth to score its only run of the day before Schorn got a line out to leave two runners on. The Pioneers secured the win in the bottom of the sixth, adding another pair of runs. After Boone led off with a single, Holdridge doubled to left center and freshman outfielder Renaye Gamson singled in the infield to bring in pinch runner Mary Ogden. Gamson then got caught stealing at second, but pinch runner Tia Wunder came home on the throw down to put the Pioneers up 6-1.
Schorn threw the complete game, allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings of work, striking out seven. Together, Schorn and Zweigle struck out 18 of the 56 batters they faced and gave up just seven hits and five walks.
Holdridge led the Pioneers at the plate on the day, going 5-for-7 with a run and five RBI, while Boone went 4-for-7, scoring two and driving in another four. Coronado and Hasenfus were successful at the top of the order, both going 3-for-6, with Coronado scoring three times and Hasenfus scoring twice and driving in another.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will return to action this weekend, when it travels to Humboldt State to meet the Jacks for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers and Jacks are currently set to meet in the first doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. in Arcata. With rainy conditions in the forecast, updates on weekend schedules in Arcata will be available on the Pioneer Athletics website.
