Cimino Leads Pioneers at Coyote Classic

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ men's golf team returned to action this weekend, playing at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic and finishing 17th overall. The Pioneers were led by Jordan Cimino's 10-over 220 and shot a combined 908 over three rounds at Arrowhead Country Club.

The Pioneers finished the first day of the tournament in 14th, led by a three-over 73 from Cimino and rounds of 77 from Garret Baxley, Andrew Walters and Justin Tambunting. Day two saw East Bay fall into 17th after they struggled through wet conditions, shooting a combined 307 but getting two rounds of six-over, 76 from Cimino and Wes Davis.

Cimino capped a quality weekend with a one-over 71 in the final round that saw the Pioneers shoot their best combined score of the weekend with a 17-over, 297. Tambunting was just behind Cimino on Tuesday with a 72, while Baxley posted a 75 and Walters and Davis each shot 79 on the final day.

Cimino finished the tournament tied for 36 in a field of 88 golfers, while Tambunting was just six strokes off with a 226, good for a tie for 59th. Baxley tied for 67th with a total of 230, while Walters and Davis rounded out the group with a 237 and 241, respectively.

Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the tournament title with an eight-over 848. The Otters were followed by Barry University, Chico State, Sonoma State and the host Coyotes to round out the top five. San Bernardino's Gene Webster, Jr. took the individual title with an impressive 14-under, 196 over three rounds, including a tournament-best seven-under, 63 on Monday. Players from CCAA schools captured each of the top six individual spots in the tournament.

The Pioneers return to action next week as they play host to the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Invitational at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo. The tournament is set for three rounds over two days, beginning Monday, Mar. 7.
