Annual Yoshi's fundraiser pairs student ensembles with jazz professional

Bassist and composer Marcus Shelby will headline ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s 11th Annual “Night of Jazz” fundraiser Tuesday, March 16 at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Jack London Square, Oakland.
The concert will include music by all of the CSUEB jazz ensembles under the direction of Johannes Wellman, assistant professor. All proceeds from the two shows, at 8 and 10 p.m., will go to the CSUEB Music Scholarship and Special Events Funds.
Shelby is the artistic director and leader of a namesake jazz orchestra, septet and trio; is an instructor at the Berkeley Young Musicians Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop; and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University.
City Flight named Shelby one of the “10 Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area in 2005,” and Jazz Times referred to his most recent album as “a multi-level achievement and a landmark.”
"The concert at Yoshis is the highlight of our annual performance calendar," said Wellman. "We are thrilled to be performing at this internationally recognized venue with such an important Bay Area figure as composer and bassist Marcus Shelby."
