- February 19, 2010
SEASIDE, Calif. - Though it trailed by just three with five minutes remaining in the game, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women's basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback, falling to Cal State Monterey Bay, 53-43, on Friday night at the Kelp Bed. The Pioneers (1-23, 1-18 CCAA), who were led by junior guard Claudia Nelson's 19 points, trailed by three at halftime but shot just 29 percent from the field in the loss.
The two squads traded buckets throughout most of the first half, with East Bay leading by as many as five early on and fighting back from a five-point deficit to gain a 14-12 advantage with 12:01 remaining. After a 9-2 CSUMB run, the Pioneers responded with three straight layups from freshman Marlene MacMillan to finish the half trailing 25-22.
Neither team had a great first half, with East Bay hitting just nine shots from the field and the Otters shooting just 30.3 percent. The Pioneers went to the free throw line just twice and turned the ball over just nine times while posting six steals in the first frame. Nelson's nine points led all players in the opening half.
Cal State Monterey Bay kicked off the second stanza with a 16-9 run to take a 41-31 lead at the 11:28 mark, its largest advantage of the game to that point. The Pioneers closed the gap to three, 41-38, with seven unanswered points, thanks to a three and a layup from junior center Amaris Sanders and jumper from Nelson.
After the Otters regained a six-point lead, East Bay got a steal followed by a free throw from freshman center Lauren Lucchesi and a bucket from Nelson to cut the Monterey Bay lead to 44-41. The Pioneers, however, would only hit one more field goal, while the Otters hit four of their final six free throws to seal the victory.
The low-scoring affair saw the two squads combine to go just 36-for-118 from the field, shooting a combined 19 percent from beyond the arc. Nelson and Monterey Bay leader Helen Suarez were the anomalies, going 7-for-15 and 6-for-9 from the field, respectively.
Nelson's 19 point night marked the 19th time this season she has hit double figures and the eighth time in the last 10 contests. MacMillan and freshman guard Emily Valenziano chipped in eight points apiece. Lucchesi's seven rebounds paced the Pioneers, who were out-rebounded by 17 on the night. Meanwhile, East Bay's 14 turnovers matched its season-low.
Monterey Bay, which clinched a spot in the CCAA Tournament with the win, was led by Suarez' 16 points and Julie Heurung's 16 boards. Veronica Williams joined Suarez in double figures with 12 points of her own.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow night in their final road game of the season at San Francisco State. The "Battle of the Bay" matchup is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. in San Francisco.
