HAYWARD, Calif. - For the first time in program history, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women's water polo team is ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 20 Varsity Poll, taking the No. 19 spot in this week's rankings. The Pioneers (4-4) downed three Division I opponents at last weekend's Roadrunner Invitational in Bakersfield and are the only Division II team ranked in the poll.
East Bay opened the weekend with a 14-10 loss to then-No. 9 Hartwick before bouncing back with one-goal wins over then-No. 17 Cal State Bakersfield, Colorado State and Santa Clara. The Pioneers posted a thrilling 10-9 overtime win over the host Roadrunners on Feb. 13, scoring three goals in the extra periods for the win.
On Sunday, East Bay opened the day with an 8-7 victory over Colorado State, out-scoring the Rams 3-1 in the third quarter and holding on for the win. The Pioneers capped the tournament with a come-from-behind, 9-8 win over Santa Clara. Meeting the Broncos for the second time this season, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ trailed 7-3 at the half before roaring back with a 6-1 run in the final two quarters to seal the win.
Senior utility Jenna Casady scored back-to-back goals in the final period against Santa Clara, including the game winner, to bring her weekend total to eight. Meanwhile, freshman goalie Emily Hucal posted her fourth win over a Division I opponent and made a crucial save on a Santa Clara penalty shot with 2:54 remaining in the match.
The Pioneers had three players score at least seven goals on the weekend, with Casady's eight, and junior utility Whitney Bell and freshman utility Claire Pierce notching seven goals apiece over the four games. Hucal had a stellar weekend as well, making 21 saves in 108 minutes of play for East Bay.
Stanford maintained the top spot in the Feb. 17 edition of the poll, as did the remaining teams in the top five. USC earned the No. 2 ranking, while Cal, UCLA and Michigan claimed the three, four and five spots, respectively.
The CWPA poll is voted on by 10 coaches and sports information directors from CWPA member institutions. The voters represent institutions from all conferences and all areas of the country across all divisions.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ returns to action this weekend, playing host to Cal Lutheran on Friday and Fresno Pacific on Saturday before traveling to the Seawolf Splash at Sonoma State on Sunday. The Pioneers and Regals are set to get underway at 4 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday's matchup with the Sunbirds will open at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Pool.
