HAYWARD, Calif. - Despite scheduling around wet weather all weekend, the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ softball team managed to fit in all four games with Cal State San Bernardino, earning a split with the Coyotes as it finished up the series on Sunday. The Pioneers (4-8, 4-8 CCAA) fell, 6-0, in the conclusion of game two before downing San Bernardino, 6-4, in game three and dropping game four, 6-1, after getting the series opening on Saturday.

The two teams resumed the scoreless game two in the top of the fourth inning, where the Coyotes got started right away, putting up four runs on two hits. After Courtney Willhelms reached on an error, Ashley Collinwood doubled to left before Felicia Cervantes drove in the first run of the game  with one out. Pioneer junior pitcher Cat Schorn got a ground out before Stefanie Pace knocked out a three-run homer with two outs to bring the San Bernardino lead to 4-0.

The Coyotes added another two runs in the fifth inning with another homer, this time off the bat of Jacquelyn Holtzclaw, to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. From there, CSUSB lefty pitcher Cassidy Lee three two-hit softball to shutout the Pioneers and earn her second win of the season, while Schorn took the loss, her third.

Game three saw the two squads combine for their highest run total of the series and got started immediately as San Bernardino took a 1-0 lead after just half an inning. The Pioneers responded, however, as senior Sarah Davini led off the bottom half of the first with a double to left. After a walk for freshman Emily Montanez, freshman designated player Sarah Holdridge came to the plate with two on and two out and drove a pitch from Brianne Godfredson over the left field fence for a three-run shot to give East Bay the 3-1 lead after just one inning.

Freshman starter Lauren Zweigle sat down the next three Coyote batters, bringing the Pioneers to the plate again with a 3-1 advantage. A pair of walks for senior catcher Rachelle Boone and Davini put two on for freshman shortstop Ashlee Coronado who drove a ball into center for a two-run double to give East Bay a 5-1 lead through two innings.

A five-hit, three-run third saw San Bernardino close the gap to just one, 5-4, and chase Zweigle from the game. After two scoreless half innings, the Pioneers added the insurance run on a one-run double from Davini in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. With the two-run lead, Schorn finished out the game with four shutout innings to earn her fourth win of the year.

Davini paced the Pioneers in the win, going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Coronado and Holdridge both went 1-for-3 with Coronado driving in two and Holdridge driving in three and scoring one.

The final game of the series again showed how evenly matched the two teams were, as a single big inning for the Coyotes proved to be the difference. Both Zweigle and CSUSB starter Carly Land pitched four innings of shutout softball before the Coyotes put together a couple of hits to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. After a pop out to start the inning, Holdridge blasted her second homer of the day, tying the game 1-1. East Bay got two more runners on but could not bring them around, ending the inning with things all tied up.

The top of the seventh proved to be the game changer for San Bernardino, as it brought in five runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead. A two-out single from freshman Devon Mercurio was the only offense the Pioneers could muster in the last ups, giving CSUSB and Godfredson the win.

Davini capped a quality weekend with a 2-for-7 day at the plate with two runs, an RBI and three walks in the final three games. Meanwhile, Holdridge scored a pair and drove in another four with a pair of homeruns. The Pioneers earned their first split of the season on the weekend while scoring a combined 10 runs, the most in any series so far this year.

ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ returns to action on Tuesday, as it meets Notre Dame de Namur in its first non-conference doubleheader of the 2010 campaign. The Pioneers and Argonauts are set for a 1 p.m. first pitch in Belmont.
