East Bay Swept by Chico State in Saturday Doubleheader

CHICO, Calif. - The Pioneer baseball team was swept by Chico State, 17-12 and 4-2 in a CCAA doubleheader on Feb. 13.

In the first game, the Pioneers trailed 7-0 after two innings. ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ scored four runs in the third inning as Levi Josewski hit a two-run homer, the Pioneers first home run of the season.

The Pioneers took a 12-11 lead with six runs in the seventh inning. Devin Grigg opened the inning with a single and scored on Nick McManus double. Josewski singled and the next hitter John Howard got a base hit scoring McManus.  Charlie Sharrer singled to load the bases. After one was out, Josewski scored on a wild pitch. Aaron Brown walked to load the bases. Stephen Gatehouse hit a sacrifice fly scoring pitch runner Richie Gonzalez. Alex Anicich got an infield hit to load the bases. Grigg walked to score Sharrer. McManus walked to score Brown with the sixth run.

Chico State struck for six runs in the bottom of the eighth including a Kevin Seaver two-run homer that put the Wildcats back into the lead.

McManus was 3-for-4 at the plate including four RBI. Gatehouse and Anicich each had three hits. Rich Kemp, the fourth of four Pioneer hurlers, took the loss.

In the second game, the Pioneers received a solid pitching performance from John Volk who went the distance allowing four runs on seven hits and three strikeouts in six innings. 

The Pioneers scored single runs in the second and third innings. Josh Rush hit a solo home run in the second inning.  Levi Josewski doubled and later scored on Charlie Sharrer double to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Jackson Evans hit a game-tying homer in the fourth and Deven Braden hit a two-run shot later in the inning to give the Wildcats the lead for good.

Stephen Gatehouse, Nick McManus, Sharrer, and Richie Gonzalez all had two hits for the Pioneers.
