2010 ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Women's Water Polo Preview
- January 15, 2010
HAYWARD, Calif. - The 2010 spring season will mark the first in Division II for the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women's water polo team. Though the team will face many of its familiar opponents, Head Coach Lisa De Rossi-Cooper and the Pioneers now have the distinct advantage of athletic scholarships to attract recruits from both near and far. With a core group of returners from the 2009 team and a strong group of new faces to bolster the roster, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ looks poised to make a mark in 2010.
Now in her eighth season at the helm for the Pioneers, De Rossi-Cooper's resume includes the 2008 Collegiate III National Title, Coach of the Year honors and top-five national finishes in each of the last six seasons. The Perth, Australia, native and former Hawai'i standout has produced 18 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Americans and 49 ACWPC All-Academic selections over the last seven years, while also helping her squad to seven straight ACWPC Team Academic awards. This season, De Rossi-Cooper has added Assistant Coach Ryan Cunnane, former girl's water polo coach at Piedmont High School, to her staff, and welcomes back Dr. Calvin Caplan as the goalie coach.
The Pioneers return nine players from the 2009 squad that finished fifth at the Collegiate III National Championships, including their top six leading scorers. Junior driver Mary Rosa and junior two meter Liz Warren combined to score 173 of ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥'s 405 goals last year, while senior utility Jenna Casady returns after pacing the 2009 squad with 70 assists to go along with her 56 goals on the year. Each member of the trio collected ACWPC All-America honors for their efforts, with Rosa earning a second team selection and Warren and Casady taking home honorable mentions. Casady and Rosa were also named to the College III National Championships All-Tournament second team.
Junior driver Ana Rosa, senior driver Lauren Griffin and senior two meter Brianna Finney round out the top-six returning scorers who made up 85 percent of the Pioneer offensive output last season. Junior driver Jenna Gelet and sophomore utility Ali Berlin, who combined for 24 goals, 25 assists and 23 steals in 2009, are also among the returners for the Pioneers. In goal, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ returns senior Lauren Merrill who made 146 saves and had 30 steals in 2009.
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ will also welcome 10 talented newcomers this season, including six community college transfers. Driver Danielle Comforti and utility Whitney Bell join the Pioneers from Sierra College, where the pair helped guide the Wolverines to the 2008 Big 8 Conference title and a third-place regional finish. Bell garnered a First-Team All-Big 8 selection, while Comforti was a second team honoree. Palomar College standouts Tristan Kennedy and Katelyn Mascoto come to ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ after leading the Comets to the 2008 Pacific Coast Conference championship. Kennedy was among the conference leaders in scoring and picked up All-America honors for her efforts. Junior two meter Allie Glogovac is also a transfer student, joining the Pioneers from Ohlone College. Meanwhile, Kendra Mason, a former softball player at Napa Valley College and ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, returns to the water and will battle for time in goal this season.
Australian utility Claire Pierce highlights the cast of incoming freshmen for 2010. A native of Perth, Pierce helped the Australian Junior National Team to a seventh place finish at the 2009 Junior World Championships and a silver medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. Joining Pierce in the freshman class are utility Chelsie Bryan, from Alamo, driver Alex Gudenau from Rancho Cucamonga, goalie Emily Hucal from Simi Valley, and utility Kelsey Baldree from Irvine. Bryan helped lead San Ramon Valley High to a North Coast Section quarterfinals appearance in 2009 and Hucal was a Southern Section Division II quarterfinalist with Royal High School, while Gudenau and Baldree both led their teams to a sectional playoff berth last year.
With a quality arsenal and combination of experienced veterans and young energy, the Pioneers are prepared to take on a tough schedule featuring a mix of Division I, II and III opponents. The 2010 slate will feature eight teams ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Preseason Varsity Top 20 and Division III Top 10 polls, including No. 5 Cal, No. 13 Hartwick College and Division III No. 2 Cal Lutheran. The Pioneers will face several tough tests, including a visit from the Regals on Feb. 19 and a Spring Break trip to No. 19 Indiana for the Fluid Five Tournament on March 27 and 28. The Western Water Polo Association Conference Tournament will cap the season, April 30-May 2.
Though they have a challenging campaign ahead of them, the Pioneers look set to make a splash in 2010 thanks to quality coaching, experienced veteran players and talented newcomers. The season kicks off this Sunday with an exhibition tune up against Olympic Club. The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ regular season opener is set for Jan. 30 at the Northern California Invitational at Cal, while the Pioneers will play host to Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 7 at Noon in their home opener.
