Pioneers Drop Four-Set Match in Finale

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Pioneer women's volleyball team concluded the 2009 campaign with a four-set defeat to Sonoma State on November 14. The scores were 24-26, 25-20, 19-25, 18-25. In the first set, the Pioneers held a 24-19 advantage on Katie Gellerman's kill. Sonoma State scored seven unanswered points including an over lap against the Pioneers to win the first set.

Trailing 2-0, the Pioneers bounced back in the third set taking a 20-14 lead on a kill by Brianna Bryant. Sukhjit accounted for two of the Pioneers last five points including a kill to end the third set. Kayla Woods kill gave the Pioneers a 17-16 lead in the fourth set. Sonoma State outscored ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ 9-1 to take the fourth set and the match. Athwal led all Pioneer hitters with 14 kills. Woods came off the bench to record nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage. Roxanne Neely played a solid match with six kills, 31 assists, and nine digs.
