- July 24, 2009
ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ volleyball player Jackie Randolph was named the 2008-09 Female Student-Athlete of the Year by the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) on Friday.
Randolph, a senior from Alameda majoring in criminal justice, had earlier in the year been named to the 2008 All-America first team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
“Physically, Jackie was dominant,” said Jim Spagle, ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ women’s volleyball coach. “She commanded a lot of our matches with her strength and power. I always strongly believed that she was the most dominating player in NCAA Division III women's volleyball. This award serves as proof.”
As an outside hitter on last year’s 29-5 squad, Randolph led the Pioneers on the attack, averaging 4.17 kills per game and swinging at a .310 clip. She tallied 15 or more kills in 12 matches, including a season-high of 22 in matches against both Puget Sound and Trinity (Texas). She also added 28 aces and 35 total blocks in 2008.
Randolph was a key cog for the Pioneers defensively, finishing the season second on the team in digs and digs (4.23) per contest. Her play helped to guide the Pioneers to their 11th straight appearance in NCAA postseason play after climbing as high as eighth in the AVCA Division III national poll. The team recorded three-game sweeps in 20 of their 29 victories.
She earned AD3I Volleyball Player of the Year honors, appeared on the AD3I All-Independent Volleyball First Team, and was ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥’s Female Athlete of the Year.
The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize their student-athletes and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports during the 2008-09 academic year. The AD3I recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis.
All competing student-athletes from the association’s 17 members were eligible for the award. Each school nominated its top performing male and female student-athletes from 2008-09. The award recipients were selected after a vote of the AD3I Student-Athlete Recognition Committee
