Professor Henig discusses Union's first black hero

History Professor Emeritus Gerald Henig returns to the ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥, East Bay campus May 14 to deliver the History Spring Lecture on “William Tillman: The Union’s First Black Hero.”

The 6:30 p.m. presentation will be held in the Biella Room of the University Library, 25800 Carlos Bee Blvd., Hayward. The public is welcome. Admission is free.

Henig, who has won the CSUEB Outstanding Professor Award and other lecturing honors, will provide a new look at African Americans’ engagement in the nation’s trial by fire, the Civil War. He'll also discuss Tillman, a ship’s steward, who captured one of the first Confederate privateers to be seized by the North during the war.

A campus parking fee of $5 per vehicle per day is enforced at all times. Machines in lots take dollars and quarters.
